Who makes all this happen?
The short answer to this question of course is volunteers,
people just like you. Luckily, though, none of us has to do it alone. Act 97-421 creates
Support Councils composed of people with developmental disabilities and family members to
implement the provisions of the law. These include five Regional Councils, local Community
Councils and a State Council. It is through these Councils that people with developmental
disabilities and their family members make decisions about how supports are funded in
their communities. Each Council has an allocation of funds to distribute, and its members
actually decide what supports to fund. It is without question, an awesome responsibility
and one that must be undertaken with the principals of
Individual and Family Support uppermost in our minds.
The legislation gives each level of Council an important
part to play in this effort.
